in some sections of the u.s., and hurricane sandy hampered northeast economic growth. information compilied in the fed's beige book will be considered at the fed's next meeting december 11 & 12. the dollar figure on damage caused by superstorm sandy continues to climb. new jersey governor chris christie is asking the federal government to cover nearly $37 billion in damages. fema has already handed out more $500 million in assistance. yesterday, new york governor andrew cuomo pegged sandy damage at $32 billion in his state. insurance giant allstate predicts it will lose 1 billion dollars in catastrophe costs in october, mostly due to sandy. bp is getting a slap on the wrist from the government. the enviornmental protection agency will temporarily suspend the company from opening new contracts. following the 2010 deepwater horizon spill, the epa says bp acted with a "lack of business integrity." it will not impact bp's current contracts. earlier this month, bp pled guilty to charges connected to the 2010 deepwater horizon spill and was slapped with a $4.5 billion fine. bp's suspen

as adp misses estimates. the blame goes to superstorm sandy. goldman says the party is officially over for gold. >> starbucks at an investors conference will add 1,500 stores in the u.s. over the next five years. wait until you hear what they said about china. >> a big day in media. pandora ceo joins us live later this morning as the stock fell nearly 20% on weak guidance and netflix signs a big exclusive with disney. how much are they having to pay up for that? >>> let's deal with this big deal. as i've been telling you we'll see a lot of big deals -- i was wrong. here we are. freeport mcmoran buying not one but two companies. the combined price if you add it all together gets close to $20 billion. that does include debt. let's go through some of the details. it's somewhat complex. let's start with bigger of the two deals. freeport's purchase of plains. approximately $6.9 billion in total now. it's a cash and stock deal. .6531 shares and 39 bucks a share in cash. that adds up to $50 a share. that's a fairly significant premium when we look at where pxp, that being the ticker symbol in

about 60 points. jobless claims were back under 400,000. but we still don't know the impact of sandy. let's face it, you guys have been talking about it all day. it seems that john boehner smiles and people buy a million shares of ibm right now. yesterday we were down about 100 points before boehner came out and spoke. i know on "morning joe" you talked about maybe he's a little less optimistic. mabel the phone conversation with obama was a little more terse. we went from being down 100 to up 100. we haven't had that kind of swing in over a year. we are laser focused on d.c. and those negotiations as usual. >> brian brings up 2.7 number, steve rattner. i guess you look at the numbers and you compare them to where we were at points in the '80s, the '90s, even 2004, 2005. it may not look good. compare that number to the rest of the world, suddenly the u.s. economy is looking pretty damn good by comparison to other countries. >> it actually feels like the economy is gathering steam. these kind of revisions help you feel that way. sandy is an aberration in the unemployment numbers as bri
